Saturday's been playing shows with Detroit pop legends Outrageous Cherry since the band began, and I've been going to their gigs since 1994. They are an amazing band, driven by songwriting genius Matthew Smith, who you may remember singing "No Good With Secrets" on our All Your Summer Songs album.
Recently Burger Records put out a retrospective cassette featuring 20 of the band's greatest tunes from their lengthy and still ongoing run. It's amazing, but as with any hyper prolific band, it'd be hard to find a best of that hits the mark for every fan. I made my own OC playlist in 2009 and maybe like 1/8 of it matched up with the Burger tape.
After listening to the tape and then my own best of mix for the better part of two weeks, I thought it'd be fun to take an evening and record covers of some of my favorite O.C. songs. Strictly four-track style, pretty rough around the edges, even down to the scraping noise from a malfunctioning master cassette, but still pretty stoked on spending a night re-learning some of these amazing songs and sharing them here. They don't do justice at all to the originals, but if you're listening to Saturday and dig the style at all, you'll probably find a depth of things to love in these songs and the rest of the massive Outrageous Cherry discography.
