about

During the pandemic lockdown, I found this cassette that simply said "Mar 11 2005" and was amazed to discover it was a show from one of Saturday's dreamier configurations during our peak touring times.

By 2005, some version of the band had been on tour consistently for about two solid years. We'd released two albums within 18 months of each other, and it was my tendency to say yes to every gig we were offered. With this particular, pre-SXSW run, our drummer Steve Middlekauff had let me know far in advance that he couldn't come along, but somehow I forgot that until the day the tour began. Switching things up on the fly, we just did a more mellow, drums-free set with stumbling versions of material from Every Night and Summer Songs, and a bunch of covers. This tape only had the first 45 minutes of the set, but I recall a very loose version of Big Star's "Thirteen" happening in the second encore.

Some bands get tighter and more streamlined after months on the road, but the fluid line-up and general unprofessional approach of SLGTM always took us in the other direction. We rarely practiced, tried not to soundcheck, improvised set lists and never did the same thing twice. The performances from this night are shaky at best, but this particular show was in some ways the apex of how the band operated at the time. The drummer couldn't make it, we did the gig anyway. We'd never played some of these songs live and half the band didn't know the changes-- that's cool, let's see how it goes. Flying this fast and loose for over 150 shows a year wouldn't always yield the best results, and returns diminished as the band kept pushing full speed for another three years, but this night in Champaign/Urbana was a highlight of this era's shabby warmth.

The gig happened at a bar called Cowboy Monkey and the bands Ume and Headlights also played.
